The Benefits

Three kinds of good — all at once

Research consistently shows driving simulator activity benefits older adults across cognitive, physical, and social dimensions. Unlike a crossword or a walk, it exercises all three at the same time.

01

Cognitive
Benefits

Driving is one of the most cognitively demanding tasks a person does. It engages attention, memory, decision-making, and spatial awareness — simultaneously.

  • Improves divided visual attention
  • Sharpens executive function
  • Exercises working memory
  • Strengthens reaction time
  • Supports mild cognitive impairment (MCI) intervention
02

Physical
Benefits

Simulator driving involves hand-eye coordination, pedal use, and controlled upper-body movement — gentle, repeatable motor practice without physical risk.

  • Maintains fine motor control
  • Practices hand-eye coordination
  • Improves pedal control and braking response
  • Encourages postural engagement
  • Zero fall risk, zero road risk
03

Social &
Emotional

Group sessions create friendly competition, shared stories, and genuine fun. For seniors who've given up driving, the experience can be deeply emotional.

  • Combats social isolation
  • Builds confidence and self-efficacy
  • Provides a joyful, purposeful activity
  • Reduces depression linked to driving loss
  • Creates shared experiences with family
Post-Stroke & Recovery

Relearning the road,
one safe lap at a time.

For stroke survivors and those recovering from neurological events, returning to driving is one of the biggest markers of regained independence. Simulators make that path safer, measurable, and more likely to succeed.

73%
of stroke patients who completed simulator-based training passed their official pre-driving assessment, vs. 42% in a cognitive-only control group.*
~33%
of stroke survivors need structured driving rehabilitation before safely returning to the road.**

* Akinwuntan et al., Neurology (2005)  ·  ** George et al., Cochrane Review (2014)

  • Post-Stroke Recovery Practice braking, lane control, and reaction time in a zero-risk environment as part of a structured rehab plan.
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation Targeted attention, executive function, and spatial awareness work for patients with MCI, TBI, or early dementia.
  • Return-to-Driving Assessment We partner with driving rehab specialists and OTs to provide simulator time as part of professional evaluations.
  • Confidence Rebuilding For anxious older drivers or those recovering from accidents, supervised simulator sessions rebuild driving confidence safely.

Academy Sim Racing provides simulator experiences and structured programs — we are not a medical provider. Clinical outcomes depend on individual health, program design, and involvement of qualified healthcare professionals. We're happy to partner with your facility's clinical team.

Questions We Hear Often

Frequently asked

Is it really safe for someone elderly or post-stroke?

Yes. Because everything happens in a simulator, there's no risk of collision, falls, or physical harm. We can adjust difficulty, speed, and traffic density for each participant. Sessions are always one-on-one with trained staff. For those with medical conditions, we recommend clearance from their physician first — and we're happy to coordinate with your clinical team.

What about simulator sickness / motion discomfort?

Some individuals experience mild disorientation during first-time use, similar to mild motion sickness. We start with slow, calm scenarios, keep initial sessions short (15–20 minutes), and monitor comfort closely. Most participants adjust quickly. Those with severe vestibular conditions may not be candidates — we'll discuss this during the initial consultation.

Do you come to senior living facilities in Florida?

Yes. We're based in Tampa and routinely serve facilities across Tampa Bay and statewide Florida. Travel is factored into program pricing based on distance and frequency. For facilities beyond our standard service area, we're still happy to discuss options.

Can this replace professional driving rehabilitation?

No — and it shouldn't. Our simulators are a tool that complements clinical rehabilitation, not a replacement for it. We partner with occupational therapists, driving rehabilitation specialists, and physicians who use simulator time as part of a supervised program. For return-to-driving evaluations, we recommend working with a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS).

How much does a facility program cost?

It depends on whether you want an occasional visit, a weekly program, a group event, or a clinical partnership. One-time facility visits and recurring wellness programs are quoted separately. The best starting point is a free discovery call — tell us what you're trying to accomplish and we'll design a program that fits your budget.

Is this appropriate for someone with dementia or memory loss?

For early-stage cognitive decline (MCI, mild dementia), many participants do very well and research supports benefits. For more advanced dementia, appropriateness varies by individual and we work with families and clinical staff to assess readiness. We never push someone who isn't comfortable — the goal is engagement and enjoyment, not performance.

Is the simulator wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Our simulators are set up for easy wheelchair-to-seat transfer with staff support, and we can accommodate participants with limited mobility. Just let us know about specific needs in advance so we can prepare.

Can family members participate too?

Absolutely, and we encourage it. Family-inclusive sessions create shared experiences that are often more emotionally meaningful than solo sessions. Adult children who haven't seen their parent "drive" in years often find it incredibly moving.

Bring back the thrill.

Whether it's a birthday they'll never forget, a facility program that has residents actually looking forward to activity day, or a parent who just wants to feel young again — let's talk about making it happen.
